The horrific influenza epidemic in Europe at the start of the 20th century, coupled with the two World Wars were largely responsible for the unprecedented annihilation of much of Europe’s established musical talent.
This consequently led to the forgetting of performance practice traditions prevalent for centuries before, and subsequently caused the emergence of new methods utterly divorced from what had come before.
The long withstanding use of Tempo Rubato, rhetorical gesture, and self expression in music has virtually disappeared; these practices are often frowned upon, and are largely disregarded in today’s musical scene.
Concerto Cristofori bring these traditions back to life, recreating the highly volatile and deeply affecting performances once so much revered. Through the study of early recordings and original texts, and by playing on period instruments they bring modern audiences the music as it would have sounded in the composer’s time.
This performance is a tribute to Beethoven’s masterworks, and the performance practice traditions of his time.
