We are excited to announce the launch of our new, first of its kind, MMus course module ‘Historical Keyboard Performance’ (harpsichord and fortepiano) at Birmingham Conservatoire.

The course will commence at the start of next academic year (September 2013). This will be a 15 credit module, to be available alongside other MMus Options.

The module has been designed to give students practical experience in playing music of the 17th, 18th and early 19th centuries on period instruments (harpsichord and/or fortepiano). It is intended to help cultivate an understanding of style and techniques of the time, and develop associated skills such as improvisation and continuo playing, all of which will be transferable onto your modern piano playing.

Assessments will be held in the form of a 10-15 minute pre-concert talk, followed by a 20-25 minute recital on harpsichord / fortepiano.

The module will be limited to 5 students, therefore we will be shortlisting and auditioning students on the afternoon of Friday 7th June. Auditions will last 10 minutes – please prepare two contrasting movements of an eighteenth-century sonata (Bach, Handel, Haydn, Mozart, etc.), to be played on the piano.

Students are also required to attend the Harpsichord and Fortepiano Introduction Session earlier on that day at 11pm-12.30pm, Foyer Studio.

If you are interested in taking this module next year, you must decide now, and let us know by Friday 31st May.

Also…

First year BMus piano students are strongly advised to attend, as they will be taking up fortepiano studies next year. Current second year BMus piano students who wish to continue with their fortepiano studies into next year and, similarly, those who are interested in harpsichord studies are invited to attend. Requests for further studies need to be submitted by the end of this summer term!

Please feel free to contact either of us if you have any questions.
